The Research Library is a subdivision of the A. Kasteyev State Museum of Arts of the Republic of Kazakhstan. It facilitates scientific research and provides information related to historical literature and documents. An important aspect of the library’s work is assisting museum researchers in their explorations into art theory and history, museum management, catalog publishing, art acquisition, etc.

The museum possesses a large library: its rich collection is composed of 24,333 items, including books, catalogues, art albums from the  18th, 19th and 20th centuries, magazines, newspapers and contemporary publications about art from around the world. The collection of books, catalogues, posters is one of the largest in Kazakhstan. There are books written in English, German, French, Spanish, Polish, Italian, Hungarian, Bulgarian, Czech, Kazakh, Russian, Chinese and Arabic from the last three centuries. The library’s collection addresses art, philosophy, history, ethnography, religion, cultural studies, archaeology, and also classical and modern fiction.

The heritage of Kazakhstan’s creative culture in the 20th century is preserved in the scholarly archives of several of the museum’s earliest employees: L.G. Plakhotnaya, Y.B. Vandrovskaya, S.B. Kumarova, and N.A. Polonskaya.

Materials from newspapers, magazines and books regarding Kazakhstan’s art and artists are also collected. Computer disks and videos from a variety of sources enable users to familiarize themselves with the art and cultures of many different world cultures. The library subscribes to more than 50 periodicals.
